Charges Dismissed in John Travolta Bahamian Extortion Case
Actor John Travolta opted to sit out Monday's court hearing in the Bahamas regarding the case of two people allegedly trying to extort money from him following the death of his teenage son in 2009.
The judge dropped the charges against the two defendants after the prosecutor relayed a message from Travolta saying that he no longer wished to follow through with trying to reach a conviction, says the Associated Press, .
Following the January 2009 death of Travolta's son, the 16-year-old Jett, ambulance driver Tarino Lightbourne and his attorney, politician Pleasant Bridgewater, were suspected of threatening to release private information surrounding the boy's passing. The case was previously brought before a judge, but that resulted in a mistrial in October because a Bahamian lawmaker said that the jury had acquitted one of the defendants even though they were still in deliberation.
One of his attorneys previously said that Travolta would take the stand again to testify if needed, but the actor changed his mind to avoid further emotional strain on his family.
Travolta and wife Kelly Preston are currently expecting their third child together, a baby boy.
