Trial of actress accused of sham marriage to begin
The federal trial of a Mexican-born actress accused of entering into a sham marriage to obtain U.S. residency is scheduled to begin Tuesday in Los Angeles.
Federal authorities allege Fernanda Romero, who is moderately known in Mexico and had a bit role in "Drag Me to Hell," married a pizza delivery manager in 2005. Since then, prosecutors claim Romero and Kent Ross have lived separately, dated other people and repeatedly lied on immigration forms and to investigators about their marriage.
The pair have pleaded not guilty. Their attorneys say the government cannot prove they were not in love and married only to skirt immigration laws.
A key witness is fashion photographer Markus Klinko, who dated Romero after she married Ross and has cooperated with authorities.
